For more than a half-century, Mount Airy Lodge in Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains was a popular honeymoon hideaway where couples could celebrate their romance in heart-shaped tubs and see headliners like Bob Hope and Milton Berle. It’s difficult to forget the resort’s oft-run commercial that ended with the tag line and jingle, “’Your Host With the Most in the Poconos. Beautiful Mount Airy Lodge.” The resort fell on hard times and shuttered its doors in 2001, but reopened as a casino resort nine years later.
In the revamped Mount Airy Casino Resort, visitor can indulge themselves at the tables or slots, with beer, wings and ribs at Guy Fieri’s Mount Pocono Kitchen, or with an elaborate spread at the resort’s buffet. But there is also plenty in and around Mount Airy Casino Resort to satisfy the visitor seeking a quiet respite that nourishes health and well-being.
The resort’s handsome spa features several “wet” rooms for services such as a “Clay Wrap,” of rich seaweed mud, and about a dozen “dry” rooms where you can indulge in innovative services such as a “Bamboo Face Treatment,” in which Bamboo stalks are used to improve sensory nerve perception, circulation and lymphatic drainage while relaxing your body.
In the resort’s “Mount Airy Signature Massage,” therapists offer a choice of scented organic body butters with your Swedish massage, featuring a blend of shea, cocoa, and mango butter, organic aloe juice, rose, vitamins E & C, organic black willow bark, lavender and orange essential oils.
The spa’s dimly lit relaxation area features curved, tufted lounges to which your body comfortably conforms. Set between netted curtain dividers, these lounges offer a lovely pre- or post-treatment rest as you drift away while sipping tea or enjoy a comfortable snooze.
Mount Airy Casino Resort is laid out in a way that lets you make your visit as active ore restful as you want.
A fetching indoor/outdoor pool, for example, features a lively social scene and nightlife. But there are also enough quiet nooks and beautifully appointed indoor and outdoor cabanas for a peaceful rest on a lounge after a vigorous swim. The heated pool is open year-round. Views of the resort’s lake and golf course from the pool’s outdoor deck are meditative.
There are healthy choices at each of Mount Airy Casino Resort’s restaurants, but among the more healthful that we found were dishes served at the Noodle Bar, featuring Asian specialties of fish, tofu and standard chicken and steak proteins with ample vegetables like broccoli and seaweed. We loved the vegetable sand fish fillet stir fry and side dish of enormous stalks of asparagus with garlic.
There’s also a Red Mango Yogurt Café on hand if you’re in the mood for granola and nuts or a refreshing smoothie.
